ASWSU and the Pullman Chamber of Commerce are rolling out a calendar for the month of February that will be a sight for sore wallets.
The 30 Days of Pullman calendar was put together by ASWSU with the help of the Pullman Chamber of Commerce and features deals and discounts exclusive to WSU students with Cougar Cards at different local businesses each day for the whole month, said Jordan Graham, director of community outreach.
"The idea behind the program is to get WSU students off of the hill and exploring what Pullman has to offer," Graham said in an email to The Daily Evergreen. "I want WSU students to realize what they have in Pullman they can't get anywhere else."
Graham is leading the project and said she and other ASWSU staff members got the idea from a brainstorming session with a student from Virginia Tech during a conference in Denver. Graham said she and ASWSU Director of Student Life Kyle Erdman were excited about the program and thought Pullman would be the perfect place for this kind of event to happen.
ASWSU President Riley Myklebust said he hears a lot of students say there is nothing to do in Pullman but this event will highlight all of the fun things students can do in town.
"It's been one of our goals to create stronger bonds with the city of Pullman," Myklebust said.
Myklebust also said yellow calendars are being distributed at an ASWSU table in the CUB with the different deals listed for each day of the month. The backs of the calendars have a bus schedule indicating which route goes to the business with the daily deal.
The program will be educational for students as well as businesses, said Marie Dymkoski, executive director of the Pullman Chamber of Commerce. Just because most of the businesses are not chains does not mean there is nothing exciting or interesting at the local businesses.
"(There are) some really unique items you don't get when you go into a chain," Dymkoski said. "Frankly, the businesses often only see students coming in and asking for donations."
The month has the potential to not only inform students about what businesses are in Pullman, but also inform the businesses that there are more students than just those looking for donations, she said.
Dymkoski also said by going to these businesses, students have the opportunity to network and potentially meet people who could be beneficial in the job hunt. Meeting community members is how students get involved, she said.
Graham and Dymkoski both said they hope to see the program continued in the future as it will ultimately be beneficial for students as well as local businesses.
"As many people have noticed, there are only 29 days in February," Graham said.
The program got its 30 day title because there will be 30 different promotions. One was not listed on the calendar. It could be a giveaway or an additional discount and students will have to visit all of the businesses each day to find out what the 30th promotion will be, she said.
The program was originally planned to be 14 or 15 days in the beginning of the month but ultimately Graham said she chose to go with the whole month because there was a lot of interest from the local businesses.
Students can check out the full calendar by collecting a yellow sheet from the ASWSU tables in the CUB, visiting the 30 Days of Pullman Facebook page or by checking the community calendar on page two of The Daily Evergreen.
