The ASWSU Senate voted down a bill that would determine whether or not the Honors College receives a seat on the senate.
It was recommended that an Ad hoc committee be formed to look further into the Senate Consistency Act. This will be decided when the senate meets next week.
The senators reached a consensus for a motion to reconsider the bill at next week's ASWSU senate meeting.
“Ten of us felt that this bill was rushed in the end,” District 7 Sen. Ryan Stewart said. “We talked about this all semester, that we need to get on this, we need to work on this together as a group.”
The meetings that were held to work on the bill did not accomplish 100 percent of everything desired, he said. He wants the bill sent to an Ad hoc committee to work through some of the issues the senate still finds with the bill.
“Sen. Stewart said that we need to have an Ad hoc committee … I sent out emails to the school senate saying please tell me your concerns,” Senate Pro Tempore Derrick Skaug said. “Not one senator had questions for me … two-thirds majority of the senate, I believe, said this is where we need to go … I think it’s a little strange we need to form this Ad hoc committee when this bill was first presented to the entire senate two months ago.”
District 6 Sen. Joey Pacific pointed out to the senate two grammatical errors in the wording of the bill.
The two grammatical errors by themselves were enough justification to reject the bill, Skaug said.
“I like the structure of (the bill),” District 10 Sen. Alex Smith said. “I think it’s very- barring the grammatical errors- it’s well written. But I do have some concerns about it … I don’t want us to be a body that settles on something at the very end. We’re representing the students (and) we should represent them in the best possible way.”
Representing how many degrees are granted with statistics is an issue, he said. The senate looking at the number of degrees a college offers might be a better way to determine how the senate wants to proportion the number of districts and seats next year, he said.
“I’d like to say that I can see this discussion … keep going back and forth,” District 9 Sen. Charlie Hammerich said. “That’s why I feel like if we did do an Ad hoc thing … it would get (it) done, we would make sure that would be the main purpose of it.”
The work atmosphere of the Ad hoc committee would be a calm, closed setting that would allow for the senators to sit down and work through the amendment, he said. This would be best because the committee would have to come out with a consensus.
“I think this is a bill that needs to be passed,” Skaug said.
