While walking from campus to my apartment near Dissmore’s on Wednesday night, I couldn’t help admiring how glossy the snow looked, almost as though someone had polished it. When I stepped on a pile, my foot didn’t sink in. Instead, the layer of icy gloss on the snow shattered, my boot hit the ground and I barely maintained my balance and my dignity. This slick, dangerous sheet of snow and ice led to the cancellation of classes at WSU and limited Pullman Transit bus routes on Thursday. It also resulted in something I thought was a myth of Loch Ness Monster proportions – a day, midweek, when the Evergreen newsroom was not bustling with scrambling sections editors, worried writers or frantic photographers.

Just as the transportation of people around Pullman was crippled Thursday, the transportation of newspapers came to a standstill, as well. Our biggest story of the week was not immediately captured in print, but was common knowledge for anyone who looked out the window. I’ve never seen so many spinning tires, slipping students or precariously angled icicles as I have this week. I am grateful the university did not ask me to slip and slide my way to campus Thursday – particularly because slipping and sliding up Pullman hills doesn’t work very well.

Along with weather alerts and uphill battles against the snow, this week saw the formal announcement of SEB’s separation from ASWSU, a public meeting to discuss camera installation on College Hill and stories of students who braved the first round of snow last weekend to serve their community for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. Despite a week cut short by a holiday and snow day, WSU stayed busy.

I’ve checked the forecast, and it does not look as though we will be seeing another snowstorm for a while, although some scattered snowflakes are still on the agenda. Nevertheless, I will continue to hope for another crazy, snowy, fantastic week like this one. For those of you grumbling that the snow is a messy nightmare, I encourage you to settle in with a snowgarita and console yourself with the knowledge that snow days don’t come around very often at the university level. Plus, those wipe-outs in the slush and ice will be hilarious to look back on after the bruises mend. Trust me on that one.
