The Pullman Police Department will ask for public input regarding the possible installation of security cameras in Pullman during three open meetings next semester.
Pullman Police Chief Gary Jenkins said while the location of the security cameras is not confirmed, they will most likely be installed around Adam’s Mall due to the high concentration of assaults that occur there.
Earlier this year, the department was awarded a “Smart Policing Initiative” grant from the U.S. Department of Justice. The $300,000, two-year federal grant will cover the cost of the cameras, their installation and the research expenses.
The grant also requires the police department to work with an academic institution, Jenkins said. The WSU Criminal Justice Department will be involved in the pre- and post-grant research.
While the locations of the public meetings have yet to be finalized, Jenkins said there will be three meetings at different places before the policing strategies are finalized.
So far, Jenkins said, he has received mostly positive feedback regarding the installation of the cameras.
Jenkins said he is aware there are concerns about privacy, which is one of the reasons behind hosting the public meetings.
Ultimately, he said, the meetings will help develop the policing policy behind the use of the cameras.
“I want to work with the community to alleviate these concerns,” Jenkins said.
The projected installation date for the cameras is late spring or summer of next year, he said.
