Ryan ZimmerZimmer's photo titled, The Third Street Gallery located in Moscow City Hall will host a reception in honor of their Arts and Travels exhibit, showcasing works from all destinations.

The reception will take place on Wednesday, starting with an Artist Talk by local artist Matthew Brehm. It will be an opportunity for the public to see the exhibit, which runs through March 23.

City of Moscow Arts Assistant DJ Scallorn said the exhibit was timed with the season.

“This exhibit is the perfect way to see far off places and local wonders,” he said.

Thirty local and regional artists are featured in this exhibit, presenting a variety of mediums including photography, collage, watercolor and oils. Their works showcase nearby locations as well as far off places.

Ryan Zimmer, this week’s Arts and Travels featured Artist of the Week, is among those participating. Zimmer has three photographs in the exhibit titled “The Bicycle Project,” “Create” and “Explorations of Pend Oreille." “Create” and “The Bicycle Project” were both taken at the University of Idaho Arboretum and Botanical Garden.

Zimmer described “The Bicycle Project” as a tryptic, which is a single piece with three images. He said he hopes to do a series continuing on the theme of bicycles in the future.

Zimmer said he first started getting serious about photography when he went to photography school in Spokane, but has been shooting for about four years. His aunt, who is a professional photographer in Seattle, also inspired him.

He said his photography is inspired by the idea of creating new perspectives of classic scenes.

Zimmer said because he is colorblind, he focuses instead on the design and lighting elements when shooting pictures. He said he used to think it would throw him off as a photographer, but realized it has helped him see the lines of a scene rather than focus on the color.

He said he hopes to keep submitting his work to exhibits like the Third Street Gallery.

Starting March 30, the gallery will feature artwork created by local school children. All pieces were put together by the Moscow branch of Safe Routes to Schools, a national program that works to educate and encourage walking and biking around schools. This exhibit will run through April 24, with a reception on Friday, April 13 at Moscow City Hall.

The Arts and Travels reception Wednesday will begin at 5 p.m. in Moscow City Hall. This event is free and open to the public.
