Women's basketball fails to win duo of tournaments

The WSU women’s basketball team finished the Lady Lion Classic with a 69-51 win against Wisconsin and a 63-58 loss against South Dakota State.

“I was very pleased with how we played,” Head Coach June Daugherty said. “We made a little adjustment early on the defensive end that settled things down, and I thought we played really aggressive and had great execution on the offensive end, as well.”

WSU shot 58 percent from the field during the first half of the game and 62.5 percent in the second half. The Cougars held the Badgers to 33.3 percent shooting for the game. Redshirt senior guard Jazmine Perkins led the team with 16 points, and redshirt senior guard April Cook scored 11 points during the game, bringing her career total from 999 to 1,010 points and making her the 14th player in program history to reach the 1,000 career point mark.

Against South Dakota State, WSU had a field goal percentage of 40.7 percent for the first half and 43.3 percent in the second half.

“We got in a little foul trouble early but our defense in the second half got us back in the game and gave us a chance,” Daugherty said. “I was pleased with how we adjusted in the second half. Jaz (Perkins) and Carly (Noyes) did a great job of leading us in our second half rebounding and hustle plays, but our lack of execution on the offensive end in the final 90 seconds was the difference.”

During Thanksgiving Break, the team traveled to the U.S. Virgin Islands to start off the Paradise Jam. The Cougars posted a 65-52 win against Marquette, a 69-39 loss against Michigan and a 90-52 win against Prairie View A&M.

In the Marquette game, redshirt sophomore guard and forward Sage Romberg scored a game-high 19 points and a team-high eight rebounds. WSU forced 23 Marquette turnovers during the course of the game. Cook scored 12 points and redshirt sophomore guard Ireti Amojo finished the game with 13 points.

In the first half, the Marquette field goal percentage was high at 52.2. However, the Cougars brought the Golden Eagles' percentage down to 31 in the second half.

Against Michigan, WSU was kept to 33.3 percent shooting in the first half. Perkins managed to work through the Michigan defense and score nine points and five rebounds. Redshirt freshman guard Tia Presley also was able to score eight points during the course of the game. However, Michigan’s field goal percentage was 59.1 for the first half.

WSU closed out their Virgin Island stay with a game against Prairie View A&M University (PVAM).

The Cougars played tough defense, holding PVAM to 33.3 percent shooting. Cook, Presley, Noyes and Amojo all scored in the double digits during the course of the game.

The WSU Women’s Basketball team will be tipping off against Gonzaga University Wednesday in Beasley Coliseum at 8 p.m.
