Golf over for now

The WSU men’s golf team finished the fall season at the Gifford Collegiate at CordeValle, finishing last in a field of 11 teams.

WSU shot a team total of 1146 (+81). The team finished 19 shots back of the tenth place team Northwestern, and 89 shots back of the winning school USC at 1057 (-8). Cross-state rival Washington finished fifth, shooting 1094 (+29). Host UCLA finished in second place, shooting 1061 (-4).

Senior Trent Sanders was the best Cougar finisher, shooting 223 (+10) and finishing in a tie for 30th. Junior Hank Frame was the other Cougar in the top 50, shooting 228 (+15) and finishing in a tie for 50th.

Other Cougar finishers were freshman Michael Anderson, shooting 232 (+19) and finishing in a tie for 62nd. Senior Branden Dalton finished tied for 64th, shooting 233 (+20). Sophomore Jarrett Foote finished 68th, shooting 237 (+24) and senior Paul Mitzel finished in 72nd place, shooting 244 (+31).

“What we need to work on is achieving ‘competitive greatness,’” Head Coach Garrett Clegg said in a WSU press release. “We need to leave everything we have out there, and the results will be the results. Whether we’re the best team or not, we need to compete to the best of our abilities.”

USC’s Steve Lim won the individual title, shooting 202 (-11), just one shot ahead of UCLA’s Patrick Cantlay, who was the low amateur at the 2011 U.S. Open.

The Cougars have the winter off before getting back on the golf course at the end of February when they will host the ReBath Snowman Getaway in Goodyear, Ariz., at the Palm Valley Golf Course.
