The ASWSU Senate and President Riley Myklebust reached a compromise at Wednesday night’s meeting when senators chose not to overturn the president’s veto on a bill that would have enabled the senate to pass bills in one meeting.

Senator Joey Pacific, the bill’s sponsor, said he changed his mind after talking to Myklebust. Pacific said the senate should continue to send bills to committees, which prolongs the passage of bills by a week, because it gives the students a chance to voice their opinions.

“Most of us agree with Riley’s concerns that we need more time for laws to go into effect,” Pacific said. “We want more involvement, and this allows students’ input for a week.”

Senator Alex Smith agreed and said the extra week gives senators the time needed to make better decisions.

Senate Pro Tempore Derrick Skaug said he thought the bill made passage more streamlined and abstained from overturning the president’s veto.

The senate and Myklebust also reached an agreement regarding the senate’s voice in the removal of executive officers.

A new bill, 41-05, amends last week’s Executive Officer Accountability Act (41-02). The revised version does not enable the senate to object to an officer’s removal by the president unless it is for ethical reasons. However, the senate may still move to impeach an officer if it feels the officer is not fulfilling their duties.

The new amendment still requires monthly reports from executive officers, but only requires an expense report from the finance officer.

A second new bill, 41-04, is the first of several that will make ASWSU’s bylaws more comprehensible, said Pacific, the bill’s sponsor. The amendment simplifies the bylaws by tweaking grammar and punctuation, he said.

“You can’t keep people accountable if there’s no way to know what their job description is,” he said.

The senate also appointed a new director of media relations to the executive board. Ramon Armenta, previously director of multicultural affairs, will fill the recent vacancy left by Peter Wagner.

Amanda Hatfield, assistant director of multicultural affairs, presented her qualifications to move into the position vacated by Armenta. The senate will decide on the appointment next week.

Due to a recent vacancy, the district 5 senate seat is now open. District 5 encompasses residents of Rogers, Orton, McEachern and Olympia halls.

The ASWSU Judicial board also has vacancies.
