Despite not having class on Friday, students crawled out of bed in the morning and traveled to the center of campus, for the Veterans Day ceremony, which was held in the Compton Union Lounge (CUB) Lounge and put on by the Veterans’ Affairs Office and the ASWSU Student Veterans Committee.
“I thought the event was a huge success,” said Brian Beleau, the ambassador for the ASWSU Student Veterans Committee. “It keeps getting better each year.”
The ceremony began in the CUB lounge with served refreshments and a variety of speeches by guest speakers. Afterward, everyone left the CUB and preceded down the Glenn Terrell Mall toward the Veterans’ Memorial, where they held a wreath-laying ceremony. The ceremony was then concluded with a 21-gun salute. The speakers included veteran Jeremy Reynolds.
“The ceremony was a great way to honor our nation’s veterans,” freshman Sam Martin said. “The university did a really good job putting it together.”
According to its webpage, the ASWSU Student Veterans Committee is made up of student veterans from the four branches of the military. Its mission is to spread knowledge about veterans’ benefits, promote veteran-related activities on campus and voice opinions about veteran-related legislation.
WSU has several information and support opportunities for veterans, active-duty members of the military and friends and family of both. According to the WSU website, the magazine G.I. Jobs lists WSU as a military-friendly university, a distinction earned by only 15 percent of higher-education institutions around the country.
"Providing educational opportunities and support for these returning heroes is an important part of our mission as a public university,” President Elson S. Floyd said, according to an article in WSU News. “Our veterans will continue to play a central role in shaping our nation’s future, and WSU is proud to help them reach their goals.”
