Cougars lose to the No. 8 Virginia Cavaliers

The Cougars came up empty handed in Charlottesville, Va, on Nov. 18 in the second round of the NCAA tournament as the No. 8 Virginia Cavaliers outshot the Cougars 21-1, resulting in a 3-0 win.

In the 17th minute of the first half, Virginia took an early lead when junior midfielder Julia Roberts served a free kick into the box to freshman midfielder Morgan Brian.

Brian put the ball within six yards of the goal where senior forward Lauren Alwine notched her third goal of the season.

The Cavaliers continued their pressure on the Cougar defense for the next 14 minutes and doubled the lead in the 31st minute when sophomore forward Gloria Douglas finished a cross from freshman midfielder Danielle Colaprico. It was Douglas’ seventh goal of the season, and the Cougars would go into the second half trailing 2-0.

The final goal of the match occurred in the 58th minute. Virginia’s junior scoring leader Caroline Miller scored her 15th goal of the season on a cross from sophomore Molly Menchel.

The only shot the Cougars got off came in the 89th minute when senior Ali Fenter had a good look at a header, but the ball went wide left.

"We beat a very good team tonight," Cavalier Head Coach Steve Swanson said in a Virginia press release. "They are one of the better defensive teams we have seen all year, so to get three goals on them tells how well we played tonight."

The Cougars finish their season with a 12-7-4 record with a large contribution from underclassmen on the team. Potter said he looks forward to going back to work and thinks the team will only aspire to better things going forward.

"Virginia was the better team tonight," Potter said. "Obviously we are disappointed with the loss, but we have a lot to be proud of regarding our season."

WSU sends off seniors Fenter, Tiara Pittman and Jacquelyn Roth. They are the only senior class to be part of three NCAA post-season appearances, and Fenter finished her career with 86 matches played and started, which are both school records.

“Overall, it’s hard to be disappointed with tonight’s performance looking at the season we've had,” sophomore Mariah Cameron said. “I’m proud of all the girls and everything we've put into the year. Now we just start building again and gear towards next year to hopefully have another successful season.”
