Brett Bartolone’s dream has come to fruition. He will suit up for WSU Head Coach Mike Leach next year.
"That's like the main thing for me," Bartolone said. "To be a receiver in that offense. It's like every receiver's dream."
Bartolone is a two-star prospect according to Rivals.com, hailing from La Habra, Calif. He already has connections with the WSU program, as he was high school teammates with current Cougar QB Cody Clements.
Following an in-home visit from Leach and his official visit, the 5-foot-10 Bartolone decided to don the crimson and gray next season.
"I just felt really comfortable with their coaches and I just felt I would be a great fit for their offense," Bartolone said.
Leach said he was looking forward to using Bartolone in a multitude of different ways.
Cougar fans may see Bartolone lined up throughout the field in Leach’s offense.
“Very versatile, can do a lot of things,” Leach said. “(He) can play in the backfield, can play in the slot, can be a receiver, can return things. One of the most versatile guys, he kind of got on the map early as far as production down there in Southern California.”
The small, yet shifty receiver has already drawn comparisons to former Leach protégé and current NFL receiver Wes Welker. Despite that, Bartolone said he just wants to work hard and hopefully get a chance to crack the starting lineup.
"Next year I want to get up there and get in the starting rotation and get on the field," Bartolone said. "I want to compete, obviously I want to be the best out there but I just got to work hard and hopefully I can work my way into that starting rotation."
Leach already has plans for the California native to be in the slot position and possibly move to the backfield in some sets. Bartolone said he is flexible and he is looking forward to making some pivotal plays out of the slot next year for WSU.
"(Leach) was just saying he could move me around in the slot and motion me into the backfield maybe a little bit," Bartolone said. "I'm really versatile, I can do a lot of things and hopefully I can bring some explosiveness to the slot position."
Off of the gridiron, Bartolone is still unsure what he wants to study next year. One thing he is sure of is that he wants to get into the end zone next season.
"Catch a lot of passes and touchdowns and getting that good education," Bartolone said. "I don't know exactly what I want to do yet, I'll probably decide by my sophomore year."
