A different plan for the U-District

Washington State University President Elson S. Floyd has decided to continue to pursue the proposed University District, but with a different approach.

In a letter sent out to students, Floyd wrote that he will not pursue an interlocal agreement at this time. Instead, he will ask the Pullman City Council to designate the area as the "University District" in January 2009. He will then appoint a board of advisers to discuss and define the exact terms and conditions under which the U-District will operate.

Floyd also wrote that any proposals passed by the U-District would also have to be approved by the city council.

If the council agrees to Floyd's proposal, the U-District will include the area enclosed by Stadium Way, Grand Avenue and Reaney Way and campus, also known as College Hill.

In November, Floyd told students he would make an announcement regarding the approval of the proposal in late January or early February. The letter is available on the U-District Web site.
