New at UREC for fall

During WSU’s Week of Welcome, University Recreation (UREC) offers something for just about everyone. Activities will kick off on Sunday, August 16.

A 3-on-3 basketball tournament, a ropes obstacle course, a campus bike tour, and free fitness classes are some of many activities that are available on Sunday.

Cougs Play Day will take place from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Other events on the schedule include CrossFit and kick-boxing classes. There will also be a belay clinic for rock-climbing, teaching students how to climb using ropes.

All activities will take place at the Student Recreation Center (SRC) on Valley Road.

From 7 p.m. to midnight, August 16, there will be a block party at the Valley Road playfields.

The block party will provide free pizza, sport club demonstrations, fitness classes, and an outdoor movie.

“It’s great to be out under the lights on a hot summer night. The movies we get are always good, too. Plus free pizza,” said Matthew Atwell, UREC fitness services and education coordinator.

“It’s a really cool way to kick off the week,” said Matt Shaw, UREC assistant director of competitive sports and youth programs.

The movie will begin at 9:30 p.m. No registration is required.

Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 17-18, include a belay clinic for students ($7 to register), a slackline clinic, sunrise yoga classes, free fitness classes and CrossFit.

One of the most notable events in the next three day span is the Sunset Paddle on the Snake River.

Students will kayak the Snake River each day from August 17 – 19 for the ORC’s Sunset Paddle Trip.

Both Shaw and Atwell explained the event as a way for people to experience the Palouse and meet new people.

Participants can register on the UREC website. Registration for the one-day trip will close for each day of paddling from August 17 – 19, respectively.

The cost, $25 for students, includes a kayak rental, transportation and an adventure facilitator.

The sunset paddle trip and another belay clinic ($7) will also be available on Wednesday, August 19.

Meanwhile, Thursday, Aug. 20, includes another full lineup of events. The belay ($7) and slackline clinics are back, along with free bicycle safety checks, a free group bike ride to Moscow, sand volleyball and 3-on-3 pickup basketball games.

Free fitness classes will also be available on that day.

Friday, Aug. 21, only offers the climbing wall belay clinic ($7).
