Volleyball goes winless on Arizona road trip

The second sweep in two days was handed to the Washington State University volleyball team, who will leave the desert without a win, bringing a 16-11 (3-11) record back to Pullman.

The Cougars were taken down 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 26-24) by Arizona Thursday night after being swept by Arizona State the previous night.

“We had way too many unforced errors tonight by our hitters especially, and we’re definitely not going to be in a match if we can’t keep the ball in play,” WSU Head Coach Jen Greeny said in a press release. “The legs were tired, and we’ve traveled, and we were not crisp tonight.”

Junior Jaicee Harris led the way for WSU with 12 kills hitting .219, while the usual offensive centerpiece for the Cougars, freshman Kyra Holt, only tallied nine kills with 12 attack errors while hitting -.065.

“I thought Jaicee did a fantastic job tonight. She’s been battling some injuries and hasn’t been too effective but tonight she was,” Greeny said. “She was matched up against their setter and she was aggressive. Really happy with Jaicee’s play tonight.”

Junior Ver’Leea Hardaway put down six kills hitting .455 while adding five blocks.

Allowing long runs was again a problem for WSU, as it was against Arizona State Wednesday.

The Cougars found themselves tied with Arizona 15-15 in the first set before allowing a 7-1 Wildcats run to fall behind 16-22. WSU also gave up a 5-0 run to close out their loss in the second set.

“We have to find a way to stop those runs at two or three points at the very most,” Greeny said. “We have been working on this in practice, and it worked well in the Utah match. It hasn’t worked well for us on the road so we will get back to focusing on that in practice.”

Arizona out-hit WSU .266 to .110, while the Cougars led in blocking 10-6. One big difference in the match was the 24 attack errors the Cougars tallied while Arizona only committed 15.

Next up the Cougars will host UCLA on Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. and USC on Nov. 17 at 1 p.m. The match against USC will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
