Free food, music and fun for Cougar moms will draw hungry bellies and happy families to the front lawn of Streit/Perham this Saturday.

Streit/Perham will be hosting a Mom’s Weekend barbecue Saturday from 12 – 2 p.m. The event is open to the public and is sponsored by the Washington State University Residence Hall Association.

“The point of the event is to have a place for people to go,” said Erica McCord, Streit/Perham hall president. They can come enjoy the music, weather and lunch.”

Hot dogs, hamburgers, drinks and desserts will be served at the barbecue. It is free to attend, and donations will be accepted for Crosswalk Teen Shelter, located in Spokane, Washington.

Crosswalk Teen Shelter is the only teen shelter in Eastern Washington. It helps homeless teens struggling with drug addiction by offering meals, support and tutoring.

“It’s a good cause, and it needs funding. We want people to know about it because it’s local,” said Ana Trejo, secretary of Streit/Perham hall.

Streit/Perham hall government hopes the event will help raise awareness for the Crosswalk Teen Shelter.

“They are in need of recognition, and we have a lot of people coming in and have the opportunity to inform them,” Trejo said.

She said Streit/Perham residence hall government members will inform guests about Crosswalk Teen Shelter.

McCord said Streit/Perham’s building theme this year is health and wellness, and Crosswalk Teen Shelter fits their theme.

The Border Colleagues, a band comprised of WSU students, will be performing at the event. The group has been together since October 2011, and plays at Rico’s Public House.

“This is what we like to do. It’s something fun that we all wanted to do together,” said Chris Antes, Boarder Colleagues band member.

The barbecue will be one of the band’s last performances, because many members will be graduating this spring.

“We got together and realized that there was a musical component. It started out as something to do and turned into something bigger,” said Danielle Robert, a fourth year veterinary medicine student and band member.

The event will be hosted in front of the Streit/Perham residence hall entrance and can feed a maximum of 300 people, so visitors are encouraged to come early.

“We are hoping for a good turnout from students and their moms,” Trejo said.
