Student compete in film challenge

From staff reports

Stress and anxiety levels are riding high as students reveal their films for the 48 hour: Guerrilla Film Challenge.

On April 8, The filmmaking teams were assigned their genres randomly on April 8 at the 48 hour: Guerrilla Film Challenge kickoff event. The 10 teams, ranging in size from solo creators to teams of six students, also had to include a hot dog and the line “What would you do for a Klondike Bar?” into their films.

Liz Dance, spotlight programmer for SEB, said the winner will receive $400 and the runner-up $100. She said she wanted to make the cash prize pretty high to give students incentive to make films.

Comedy, musical, horror and action are just some of the 10 genres students had to pick from. Dance wanted to create a suspenseful atmosphere in the genre picking process. She said students were antsy during the selection process because they wanted to start filming.

“Every time a genre was picked you could feel the excitement and anticipation build because teams didn’t know what was left,” Dance said.

Four judges in total will determine the winners of the cash prizes and awards. Representatives from Student Involvement and ASWSU as well as Logan Webbenhurst, the director of SEB, and a professor from the communication department will judge the videos and decide which ones win awards like best utilization of the prop, most creative, best editing and more.

Dance said the committee realizes not everyone has the equipment or means to create an outstanding video, but they do want to make sure the film isn’t fuzzy and they can hear it. Audience reaction is he most heavily weighted category, so students are encouraged to bring friends and build up the hype for their films.

The event is put on by the Student Entertainment Board (SEB) and begins at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow night in the CUB Auditorium with doors opening at 5:30 p.m.
