ASWSU calls university to implement trainings for all Greek chapters

FROM STAFF REPORTS

ASWSU President Jared Powell released a statement this afternoon calling for Washington State to implement mandatory annual cultural competency and sensitivity training for all Greek chapters.

Speaking on behalf of ASWSU, Powell stated the organization believes most Greek members are benevolent and well-intentioned.

“Many need nothing more than a reminder about the struggles faced by their fellow Cougs,” he said in his statement.

The statement also urges all students to follow Panhellenic’s lead of “Release the Yak” by deleting the anonymous mobile app, Yik Yak from their phones.

Powell referred to the racial incident that happened at Phi Delta Theta during a social function at their house, Feb. 21. The incident along with the derogatory statements made on Yik Yak prompted a social media movement, WakeUpWSU, and a silent protest on Todd steps.
