Major League Soccer is just as important as NFL

Editor:

The few times I have seen articles in The Daily Evergreen about sports outside of Pullman, they have been about the Seahawks. I’ve wondered why other regional sports aren’t also covered. For the sports section to receive my best regards, it needs to include more than just Pete Carroll and Russell Wilson, no matter how talented they both are.

American football is the most commonly watched sport in the nation, but in the Pacific Northwest, the NFL is in huge competition with other regional sports, especially Major League Soccer. The Pacific Northwest has one famous NFL team, but three popular MLS teams: Portland, Seattle and Vancouver.

If these three football clubs were to combine their fans into one stadium, the total season home game attendance would be over three times greater than the Seahawks’ total. Seattle Sounders FC alone averages more than 43,000 fans (and rising) for all 17 home games each season, while Seahawks average roughly 65,000 for their 8 home games. For each team’s average total season home game attendance, Sounders FC beats Seahawks by a 40 percent higher average.

On Aug. 25, The Daily Evergreen missed out when Seattle beat Portland 1-0 at Clint Dempsey’s debut in front of nearly 70,000 fans at CenturyLink Field.

Though the Seahawks are very popular, soccer is arguably even more popular and thus deserves its place in The Daily Evergreen.
