Track catches sun and PR’s in LA

Part of the Washington State track and field team spent the weekend in Los Angeles, competing in the USC Trojan Invitational.

Many Cougars had strong performances, especially in the javelin completion. Redshirt freshman Bradly Stevens threw the javelin a personal best 219-10, which was good for fourth place. His older brother Kyle Stevens started his season throwing for 205-4. Sam Ferenchak also threw, and placed sixth, throwing 207.

On the women’s side, senior Celena Ward threw the javelin 150-1, finishing second, and junior Kelsie Taylor finished third with a distance of 141-9.

The Cougs participation in men’s high jump saw junior Thane Pierson and sophomore Cole Smith finish fourth and sixth, respectively. In the women’s high jump, junior Audrey Ketcham finished second, clearing the bar at 5-8 3/4.

Another event the Cougs had success in were the 4X100-meter relays. The men’s team, consisting of redshirt sophomore Kyle Farmer, junior Terrance Chambers, freshman Zach Smith and redshirt senior Lucas Sealby placed fourth with a time of 41.35. The women’s team, consisted of redshirt junior Candice McFarland, sophomore Danielle Darden, junior Dominique Keel and redshirt senior Bria’una Watley placed fourth, with a time of 45.77.

Friday saw some Cougar throwers at Cal State LA, where Brock Eager placed sixth in the hammer throw with a distance of 182-4. Jada Harvey threw discus 120-9, which gave her a score good enough for 13th place.

On Tuesday, both the men and women’s teams will continue their journey through Los Angeles, with the Jim Bush Collegiate triangular meet against UCLA and Long Beach State, held at UCLA’s Drake Stadium, which happens to be the site of the 2015 Pac-12 Track & Field Championships.
