Bassoonist preps for her culminating project

From Staff Reports

As a culminating requirement for their degree, seniors majoring in music education must complete a half recital. Sonja Larson, a bassoon player, will complete her recital this Friday.

“My recital is kind of the culmination of everything we’ve been learning in terms of performing,” Larson said.

She will perform a bassoon concerto by Gordon Jacob, a sonata for bassoon and piano by Paul Hindemith and another sonata for bassoon and piano by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns. She will close with a piece of her own composition.

Entitled “Auto Rickshaw,” Larson’s composition was inspired by her time spent overseas.

“It’s supposed to represent my impressions from when I studied abroad in India,” Larson said. “It’s meant to represent the crazy traffic.”

Larson will perform with the support of her wind quintet. She said she is both excited and nervous to perform her own work, as it is one of the more difficult pieces in the recital.

“It’s definitely the hardest piece in the program, but it’s rewarding to see your own music come to life like that,” Larson said. “I’m really excited for that.”

Larson’s performance will begin at 3:10 p.m. Friday in Kimbrough Concert Hall. Admission is free.
