Cougar women gear up for daring duel with the Ducks

From staff reports

The Washington State women’s basketball team returns home to face the Oregon Ducks in Beasley Coliseum Friday at 5 p.m.

Last time the teams met in Eugene, the Cougars (13-8, 4-6 Pac-12) won 79-76, paced by the guard combo of senior Tia Presley and junior Lia Galdeira. Presley scored 29 points and had six steals, while Galdeira scored 22 and had seven total rebounds. Galdeira sank two free throws with seven seconds left in the game to put the Cougars up by three.

The team needs Presley to get back on track offensively after two quiet outings. The All-Pac-12 guard scored four points against Stanford and six against California, uncommon performances for the senior who is now fourth in the conference in scoring.

While Presley has struggled shooting, Galdeira has continued to prove she is one of the best players in the country. Galdeira is second in the conference in scoring, averaging an even 20 points per game. She nearly carried the team to victory last Monday against Cal when she scored 29 points.

WSU will have a strong chance at coming away with a victory if both Galdeira and Presley can score over 20 points. The team is 7-1 all-time and 3-0 this season when the two guards reach that mark.

The last contest was the first game since losing senior center Shalie Dheensaw to a season-ending injury, and the team responded strongly with a win. Junior forward Mariah Cooks and freshman forward Louise Brown have stepped in for Dheensaw and have played well since then.

The Cougars will have their hands full containing junior forward Jillian Alleyne, who was named national player of the week by both ESPNW and the U.S. Basketball Writers Association earlier this week. She was also named Pac-12 player of the week Feb. 2. Alleyne scored 30 points and had 25 rebounds in a victory against UCLA last Saturday.

That performance helped her become the first Pac-12 player this season to be honored with the Ann Meyers Drysdale National Player of the Week Award, which is voted on by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association.

Last time the two teams met Alleyne led the Ducks (10-11, 3-7 Pac-12) with 23 points and 16 rebounds. She is currently fifth in the conference in scoring at 17 points per game, and leads the Pac-12 in rebounding, averaging 15 per game.

After dropping their last two games, the Cougars need a victory at home in order to stay on track in the conference. The game tips off at 5 p.m. and will be broadcast on Pac-12 Networks.
