The WSU cross country team had a successful weekend in Lewiston, Idaho. Both the WSU men and women ran a strong race that resulted in a finish the Cross Country Coach Tim Riley can smile about.

The WSU men were the overall Division-I winner for the Inland Empire Classic in Idaho. Dealing with multiple injuries in the beginning of the season, they finally had a healthy roster leading up to the meet. The men’s team finished with a score of 24 points and finished ahead of schools such as Gonzaga, 39 points, and Eastern Washington, 63 points, according to wsucougars.com

“I was somewhat apprehensive coming off Notre Dame,” Riley said in an interview with wsucougars.com. “But it shows the kind of character they have to come back and really put it together.”

WSU senior runner Andrew Gonzales led the men’s team and finished fourth in the 8000-meter race. Gonzales ran a time of 23 minutes and 29 seconds.

“I felt great,” Gonzales said in an interview with wsucougars.com. “Definitely needed this after my performance at Notre Dame. I was a little upset about that as I was sick the entire week. Overall I’m happy.”

The WSU women finished in second place out of the Division-I teams that competed in the meet and finished with a final score of 33 points. Eastern was the overall Division-I winner for the women and finished with a score of 26 points.

“I was really happy with how the women ran, and since I did not see them run in Sacramento, it was nice to see them actually put it together for a second time this year,” Riley said. “Ruby Roberts ran great, and Abby Regan is starting to put it together, so that helps us a lot.”

WSU women’s captain junior Ruby Roberts led the WSU women and finished in second place overall in the 5000-meter meet, according to wsucougars.com. Roberts finished with a time of 16:58. WSU junior runner Abby Regan finished in 13th place with a time of 17:44.

The WSU cross country team will look to carry its momentum when the team competes in the Pac-12 Championships on Nov. 2 in Louisville, Colo.
