Global Scholars Hall on track for completion

From staff reports

Since last spring, construction workers have been building a new residence hall. The boundaries of the construction site have also expanded with the arrival of more tools and materials. What started as a skeletal wooden frame is now a fleshed out, identifiable brick building.

Cement and glass windows have been brought to the project site. Along with these advances, a new name has also been given to the residence hall that was once known as Northside Two.

“It’s going to be called the Global Scholars Hall now and it’s going to house the international students,” said Maddy Villacruz, ASWSU communication committee member.

International students will have the option of staying in the new building this coming fall. Like Northside, Global Scholars will have a modern design to it, complete with a rooftop terrace.

Stair structures have been built along with a vent system. Several metal pipes have also been installed on the ceilings supposedly for fire sprinklers and electricity. A lot of the remainder of the project will involve internal building applications.

“We’ve gotten the building dried in and that opens the door for us to begin sheet rocking and electrical work,” said project manager Jason Harper.

With a budget of $40,000,000, Global Scholars Hall is expected to be one of the most innovative residence halls on campus. 270 rooms will be available with the addition of a café and fresh food market.

The plan to include apartments in a residence hall is the first of its kind at WSU. Dimension details of the apartments are not yet known.

With only a few months left of construction, Global Scholars is on track to be completed by June 2015. With the use of environmentally friendly conduct and an aspiration to provide modern features, Global Scholars Hall is expected to raise the bar for residence hall quality.
