Auditions for “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” showing in April, start today in Daggy Hall.

Director and performing arts assistant professor Ben Gonzales said the plot is difficult to describe without giving away the ending.

“(It’s) brotherhood these people find (and) a driving confrontation of their own well-being,” Gonzales said.

No preparation is necessary for auditions, but Gonzales recommends getting familiar with the script to understand the different array of characters. The cast is male-oriented, with only four female roles.

Gonzales said that in the past, he has seen a lot more women auditioning than men, though it’s not clear why that is. One of his difficulties will be finding an actor who could play a character described as a “large Native American man.”

“The description is he’s 6-foot-6.” Gonzales said.

Those cast in the show should be prepared for long nights, as rehearsals will be four nights a week from 6-10 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Gonzales warned that rehearsals will be sporadic at first, but there will be a lot of bonding along the way.

“You find yourself really caring about these characters,” Gonzales said. “In the end it’s going to be a sucker punch to the dramatic conclusion.”

Auditions will be held in Wadleigh Theatre in Daggy Hall today and tomorrow from 6-8 p.m. Callbacks will take place on Friday at the same time. Plan to arrive 15 minutes early and wear clothes and shoes that allow ease of movement.
