Lawsuit filed against WSU football coaches moves to Whitman County

From staff reports

Washington State University football coaches are facing a lawsuit from former walk-on quarterback Domenic Rockey, alleging that demand for accountability led to an assault in Oct. 2013.

According to court documents, a player showed up late to a team workout and players were told to do 75 “up-downs.” According to the suit, Rockey, a freshman at the time, was unable to perform the “up-downs” correctly because of an ankle injury. As a result, coaches instructed the team to start over.

Inside the locker room after the workout, defensive lineman Emmitt Su’a-Kalio—also a freshman at the time of the incident—punched Rockey in the jaw, breaking it, shattering a wisdom tooth and chipping a molar. The incident led to Rockey needing surgery and Su’a-Kalio pleading guilty to misdemeanor assault.

The suit, which was originally filed last summer in King County Superior Court and was moved to Whitman County Superior Court last week, claims that Su’a-Kalio’s actions were a result from the coaching staff’s message to hold each other accountable. It cites Head Coach Mike Leach specifically in reference to a letter he wrote to the student conduct board stating that Su’a-Kalio misinterpreted the message and took it literally.

According to the suit, Rockey’s surgery cost $10,000 and he is seeking an unspecified amount of money in damages. His insurance paid out $2,000 for his surgery and the university around $3,600.

Neither player is currently playing football for WSU, although Rockey is still enrolled at the university.
