Kings of the gridiron

From staff reports

Even though the WSU football team had a less than spectacular season, three players have been selected to participate in three different all-star games.

Senior wide receiver Isiah Myers has been selected to play in the College Gridiron Showcase hosted at UT Arlington in Texas on Jan. 31 at 11:30 p.m. PST.

Players are picked for the Gridiron Showcase by a panel of football experts. Not only do the players receive national exposure during the game, but there are also practices and workouts leading up to the game during which they will be evaluated by NFL scouts.

Myers was well-deserving of the honor, as he hauled in 78 receptions for 972 yards and 12 touchdowns. The 12 touchdowns in one season rank third of all time at WSU. He wrapped up his Washington State career with 164 receptions, sixth most, and 19 touchdowns, fourth most of all time at WSU.

In addition, defensive lineman Toni Polé has been selected to play in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, which is hosted at California State University Dominguez Hills on Jan. 17 at 1 p.m. The game will be televised live on ESPN2.

Having been started in 2012, the bowl is relatively new. Like the Gridiron Showcase, it allows for draft-eligible players to be exposed to NFL scouts and team personnel. The coach for the American Team, Mike Holmgren, should be familiar to Seahawks fans as the Seattle team’s former coach.

Polé was a four-year letter winner in his time at Washington State and finished his college career with 75 tackles over 46 games (25 starts). Of those 75 tackles, 10.5 of them were for loss, including four sacks.

Finally, wide receiver Vince Mayle has accepted an invitation to play in the 66th annual Reese’s Senior Bowl, hosted at University of South Alabama. The game will take place on January 24 at 1 p.m. PST and will be televised by the NFL Network.

The bowl allows for top senior collegiate players to get national exposure. The two competing teams, North and South, are led by NFL coaches.

Mayle had an outstanding year in 2014, tying for the national lead with 106 receptions and leading the Pac-12 with 1,483 receiving yards; both stats are WSU single season records. Over his two-year career at Washington State Mayle hauled in 148 passes, seventh most in WSU history, for 2,022 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns. This season he was recognized for his efforts as he was named to the All-Pac-12 second team. In addition to that accolade Mayle was named a third team All-American by Phil Steele Magazine.

On Dec. 30, 2014, Mayle received an invitation to the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. The combine is held February 17-23 and serves as another job interview for potential NFL players. It will give Mayle even more exposure and will help him pursue the NFL.
