Centerpiece players continue to rise

Curtis Calhoun Evergreen columnist

Start – Tony Romo, QB, Cowboys

Romo has had a Top 5 Fantasy quarterback season so far, throwing for 15 touchdowns and just 5 interceptions on the year. He faces a Lions secondary in Week 8 that has been depleted due to inexperience and injuries. Even though he is playing the Lions in Detroit, expect this game to be a shootout, resulting in a big day for the quarterback of America’s team.

Sit – Lamar Miller, RB, Dolphins

The young but speedy Miller has been limited in production, and suffered in fantasy value because of it. With a Dolphins team in the Mike Sherman offense that relies mostly on the vertical throws down the field, Miller isn’t present in the running game or the passing game. Until we see a more consistent workload in favor of the rookie running back out of the University of Miami, Miller should be benched due to lack of usage in an offense that relies mostly on an aerial assault approach.

Start – LeSean McCoy, RB, Eagles

McCoy has seen plenty of action in Chip Kelly’s offense, and facing a Giants defense in Week 8 that has looked absolutely atrocious so far this season, the Chip Kelly offense will take full effect. McCoy has also been featured heavily on screen routes, which the Giants have had specific problems stopping all year. Playing at home in Philadelphia, expect McCoy to have a big game in a big matchup between longtime NFC East rivals.

Sit – Matt Ryan, QB, Falcons

Ryan has had a decent 2013 season, given the fact that the Falcons are 2-4 and have lost their top two receivers, Roddy White and Julio Jones. Facing a Cardinals defense that has a vicious front seven, combined with the fact that his biggest assets on offense are gone, Ryan must rely on slot receiver Harry Douglas and tight end Tony Gonzalez for help. Expect the Falcons offensive line to have plenty of problems controlling various blitz packages that the Cardinals send, which will limit Ryan’s production greatly in Week 8.

Start – Pierre Garcon, WR, Redskins

Garcon continues to be the No. 1 target for Robert Griffin III in D.C. Although he faced tough matchups the last few weeks, Garcon has a surprisingly favorable matchup against the Broncos. Denver All-Pro cornerback Champ Bailey may be sidelined with a left foot injury heading into Sunday. The Broncos lack depth in the secondary, and if Champ Bailey is unable to go at full speed for Sunday’s matchup, the speedy Garcon is bound to make big plays left and right for the Redskins.
