Five weeks in ‘Ordinary Time’

Over the course of just five weeks, three actresses rehearsed a script, learned their lines and developed their characters.

The play, “Ordinary Time,” was written by Sandra Hosking, a University of Idaho student pursuing a master’s in fine arts. It opened Oct. 3 and will run another four nights.

Per U of I’s Department of Theatre Arts website, “Ordinary Time” revolves around a woman named Aleah who undergoes a journey of self-discovery after a harrowing experience at her “corporate cubicle” workplace setting.

The show consists of three acts with a run time of about an hour and a half without intermission. It stars three actresses who play multiple parts.

One of those actresses is Emily Nash, a third year graduate student of U of I. Nash will play three different characters in the show: Penny, Jo Jean and the wife of Bath.

While Nash’s characters share some personality traits, there are also some clear differences. Nash describes Penny as kind but with a motherly sense of authority. The wife of Bath, she said, is a sweeter, softer character. Jo Jean represents a happy medium between the two.

“You only get to see the wife of Bath and Penny a couple times in the show,” Nash said. “There has to be a clear association of who that character is when they come on stage.”

The characters are individual in their own ways, but the story is told primarily from Aleah’s perspective. The wife of Bath is actually a character from Aleah’s imagintation, Nash said.

Courtney Smith designed the set to allow for mobility, enabling the audience to watch scenes change.

“You have to make the characters individual,” Nash said.“You have to know the differences in each character right when you come on stage.”

Nash said the ways in which talks and moves on stage will help the audience differentiate among her three characters.

The second round of “Ordinary Time” will take place 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10 through Oct. 12 in U of I’s Hartung Theater. A matinee will take place 2 p.m. Oct. 13.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors. U of I students get in free with their Vandal cards. Tickets are available at the door, online and over the phone. For more information visit U of I’s theatre page at www.uidaho.edu.
