Soccer shutout at home

The visiting Oregon State women’s soccer team went onto the Lower Soccer Field Friday with only three wins on the year, but the Beavers made out like thieves in a 1-0 nail-biting win against WSU.

In the 17th minute of play, Oregon midfielder Erin Uchacz scored the only goal needed in the game when she shot a low ball to the far post past WSU redshirt junior goalkeeper Gurveen Clair.

The goal came off a lucky bounce that happened to find Uchacz who was in the right place at the right time, and it overshadowed an overall good performance by WSU.

“It’s frustrating. We had chances and couldn’t convert, so they got one and put it in,” Clair said. “It’s going to happen, but it’s super frustrating to not be able to bounce back from that.”

WSU dropped its second straight home match of the season, but Head Soccer Coach Keidane McAlpine gave credit where credit was due to OSU’s tenacity.

“Give credit to the Beavers because they executed their game plan,” he said. “I didn’t think we did a great job with our intensity, and it hurt us.”

The Cougars had multiple good looks throughout the game, and the closest of which came with just 21 seconds left when WSU junior defender Jamie Schnieders sent a shot from the left side across the box just missing the far post.

Set pieces have acted as a staple in McAlpine’s offensive schemes in the past, and although the Cougars had many opportunities to capitalize on set pieces during the game, none found the back of the net.

“The service wasn’t as good today,” McAlpine said. “We served a lot to the back post that just weren’t close enough to the frame, and we did not execute on that part of the game plan today.”

After losing two close matches to conference opponents in the past week, the team will look to string together a set of wins against both Arizona and Arizona State next weekend in order to boost its tournament resume.

“Those games are now huge,” McAlpine said. “We have a long road ahead of us, so each and every game becomes a do or die kind of situation if postseason is really something we want to be a part of.”

The Cougars will go on the road and take on Arizona Friday at 2 p.m. It will air on the Pac-12 Networks. Then the Cougars will go head to head against Arizona State Sunday at 1 p.m.
