Against elite competition, WSU women’s golf couldn’t turn it around as they finished in 13th place at Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational on Wednesday in Sammamish, Wash.

After struggling the first couple of rounds of the first day, the Cougars remained in the back of the pack, which resulted in the team’s worst finish of the year.

The first day of play hurt the team’s overall performance as they were sitting at last place when the second round ended. They finished with a score of 638, (+62).

On the first day of play junior Kristen Rue led the Cougars, who were tied at 34th with a score of 153, (+9). She came back from the first round and had a strong second round with a score of 75, carding five birdies.

“Kristen played tough today and had an outstanding finish,” said head coach Kelli Kamimura in a press release. “She was 3-under for her last six holes, and I’m very proud of her fight.”

Sophomore Rachel Lewis wasn’t far behind as she tied for 47th with a score of 157, (+13). Cherokee Kim finished in third with a score of 159, (+15).

It was the same story for the Cougars on the second day of play.

Rue couldn’t manage another great round, scoring a 73 for a grand total of 226. She finished off in a four-way tie with Nicola Roessler from California, Emelie Lundstrom of San Francisco and Casey Danielson of Stanford.

Second-best for Washington State was senior Mallory Kent, who finished in a three-way tie for 49th place with a score of 238.

Freshman Cherokee Kim scored a total of 239 and sophomore Rachel Lewis carded a 246, as Washington State’s third and fourth best.

The Cougars finished with a score of 960, (+96). Stanford was consistent in their high scores, placing first with a score of 863. Host Washington came in second with a score of 890. Oregon took third with a score of 898.
