Washington State women’s soccer team (9-2-3, 2-2-2, Pac-12) fell to the Utah Utes Sunday on the Lower Soccer Field, with Utah being the beneficiaries of a double-overtime game-winning goal that ended the match with a score of 4-3.

Utah junior midfielder Katie Taylor scored the game winner in the 104th minute of play, taking a shot that curved around and over the head of redshirt junior goalkeeper Gurveen Clair.

Despite the disappointing end result, Utah’s 3-0 lead at halftime quickly dissipated as the Cougars scored three second half goals to knot the score at 3-3.

“Our energy was really good at the beginning of the second half,” Head Coach Keidane McAlpine said. “We dug ourselves a big hole early, and it wound up biting us in the end.”

Goals started in the 18th minute when Utah sophomore defender Megan Trabert scored off a scramble in front of the net and poked in the goal before WSU could clear it.

Trabert scored just 76 seconds later off another loose scramble, which extended the Utes’ lead to 2-0.

Utah freshman forward Taylor Slattery received the benefit of the doubt as she scored in the 29th minute when she slipped behind defenders and no offside penalty was called.

Although there was a 3-0 deficit leading into halftime, Washington State came out energized and hungry in the second half.

Junior midfielder Jocelyn Jeffers scored the first goal for WSU off a set piece from senior forward Micaela Castain.

Redshirt freshman defender Susie White added another score just 75 seconds later off a corner kick from freshman forward Kailiana Johnson. The goal was White’s first of the year.

Washington State drew even at 3-3 in the 70th minute when junior midfielder Nicole Setterlund headed the ball into the back of the net off an assist from sophomore forward Kourtney Guetlein.

After the equalizer went in, Setterlund knew that the team was not content with a tie, and that a game-winning goal was needed in a competitive Pac-12 conference.

“We just had to keep pushing,” she said. “We had to score that last goal because this was a must-win game for us.”

Despite a loss in the record books, there were moral victories that came with overcoming a 3-0 hole for the team.

“It just shows that our team can score, and that we have other people on this team that can score besides Micaela,” Setterlund said. “All of us needed to step up. It showed us that we could rely on other people on this team.”

Although the loss to the Utes Sunday was a heartbreaker, a 3-0 win against Colorado Friday showed some improvements on the offensive end.

Sophomore forward Cara Wegner scored two goals in the match, the first two-goal performance of her collegiate career.

Wenger scored her first goal in the 4th minute when Guetlein crossed the ball from the left side into the middle and Wegner tapped it in.

In the second half, Wegner scored her second goal in the 52nd minute off a similar assist from senior defender Delaney Zalud.

Castain scored the third goal of the match in the 58th minute when the team’s leading goal scorer spun around a defender and softly lofted the ball to the near post and over the goalkeeper’s head.

“Our energy level was very good,” McAlpine said. “Defensively, we dodged some chances, but it is always good to come away with a clean sheet.”

Washington State continues its home stand Friday when the team takes on Oregon State at 2 p.m. in the Cougars’ annual Breast Cancer Awareness Match.
