The City of Moscow and the Moscow Arts Commission invite artists to test themselves by creating 30 works of art in 30 days.

DJ Scallorn, City of Moscow arts assistant, said 30 artists will participate in the event and the resulting 900 works will be sold at the Third Street Gallery for $30 each.

Dana Aldis, a local artist, brought the idea to the city last year after being inspired by other 30-30-30 events in which she participated.

Artists may use any two-dimensional medium and will receive 30 six-inch-by-six-inch canvas boards at the start of the competition.

“There’s limited gallery space, and the size of the image had to be limited to allow us to hang all 900 works,” Scallorn said.

Aldis said the requirements of the event, including the limited size of the surface, can allow artists to experiment with new ideas.

“Doing a painting or collage or drawing every day kind of gets your creative energies moving, and you’re able to maybe branch off in a direction you might not have thought of 30 days before,” she said.

Scallorn and Aldis said the success of last year’s 30-30-30 led them to hold the event a second time. Aldis said the event not only allows buyers to walk away with an original work of art, but brings the community together.

“It’s getting art from the community out to the community, and realizing that artists are all around you,” Aldis said.

The second annual 30-30-30 art event will begin Oct. 21. Applications will be available from 9 a.m. today at Moscow City Hall or online until 5 p.m. Oct. 17 or until 30 participants apply.

Scallorn said a sneak peak of the event will be held Thursday, Dec. 5 from noon to 5 p.m. and Friday, Dec. 6 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Third Street Gallery. The final exhibition and sale will take place Dec. 6 from 4:05 to 7 p.m.

A portion of the proceeds from each piece sold will fund scholarships for the City of Moscow and the Moscow Arts Commission art programs.
