Russian pianist visits University of Idaho

From Staff Reports

Though Moscow’s name suggests its Russian origin, a visiting pianist will show off her Russian flare in our neighboring city.

Svetlana Nagachevskaya, a Russian pianist and professor at the College of Western Idaho, will perform a guest recital for the University’s Lionel Hampton School of Music.

Rajung Yang, assistant professor of piano and keyboard area coordinator with Idaho School of Music, said Nagachevskaya actually initiated communication about coming to perform in Moscow.

“We normally get guest recital requests from outside performers, and if the date works we approve it,” Yang said. “Sometimes we invite people, but this was from her request.”

Yang also said that School of Music faculty decided to schedule Nagachevskaya for a recital as they found her heritage made for a unique performance.

“She is Russian and studied at a major Russian music school, Gnesin Academy,” Yang said. “Her topic is Russian too, so we thought it might be interesting.”

Nagachevskaya chose the literature for her performance based off of her doctorate dissertation, one she wanted to share with the public.

“It’s a lecture recital on Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an exhibition, one of the big piano repertoires,” Yang said. “I believe this was her dissertation for her doctorate at the University of Arizona, and she wanted to share her research.”

Nagachevskaya will perform at University of Idaho’s Haddock Performance Hall tonight at 7:30 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door only; tickets cost $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.
