College Hill bar owners prep for Dad’s Weekend

For College Hill bars Stubblefields, Valhalla and The Coug, Dad’s Weekend means stocking up on food, staff and beverages to serve the visiting dads.

Bob Cady, owner of The Coug, said on Dad’s Weekend the bar makes five to six times the revenue. The increase is characteristic of all football weekends, he said.

At Stubblefields, dads and the staff get the chance this weekend to ‘bro’ it out with each other.

Owner DJ Goldfinger said the dads are a good crowd to have around during the weekend.

“What I love about Dad’s Weekend is that they just want to hang, they’re in and out of the bar all day long,” he said. “I really enjoy talking to them and hearing their stories.”

This weekend is different than Mom’s Weekend, all the way down to the menu, Goldfinger said. The bar has grills going to cook ribs, wings and burgers for the dads – and they keep the good beer on tap, he said.

Cady said, at the Coug, the bar offers a variety of options for Dad’s Weekend including a variety of microbrews, IPAs and different whiskeys that they don’t normally have.

Manager of Valhalla Shane Snyder said this weekend means stocking up on everything – staff numbers, beers and liquor. The bar’s atmosphere is more upbeat as dads bring fresh attitude and business all day and all night, he said.

But the owners agree that Dad’s Weekend isn’t complete without a music remix for the visitors.

“We gotta make sure there’s a mix of top 40s and dad’s top 40s,” Goldfinger said. “The music needs to be dad-friendly.”

The weekend is the dads’ chance to come back and relive the old days, he said.

“They come back here and pick up right where they left off,” Goldfinger said.

Cady said if it wasn’t for a 7:30 p.m. football kickoff on Saturday, The Coug would be busier than Homecoming.

“It’s nice to have the extra business, but it comes with a lot of stress and work,” he said. “I look forward to when it’s over and everyone gets to relax again.”

Synder said he hopes there will be a win this weekend, and that the dads come back to the bar happy.

“It’s fun seeing them have fun,” he said.

Since Stubblefield’s has many regulars, Goldfinger has gotten to know some students and is looking forward to meeting their parents.

“I know certain students, and then I meet their parents and am like, ‘Now I know where you get it from,’” he said.
