WSU’s Advertising Club showed off its creative side during a chalk drawing session Wednesday, Sept. 18, outside the GCAD building.

The club is best known as a small-scale advertising agency and a place for students to learn the art of advertising.

Senior Denise Gibbs, Advertising Club president, said members create ads for small businesses in and around Pullman, participate in public services projects, and take tours of larger advertising agencies.

“We learn a lot about the agencies and the industry,” said senior club member Sam Boucher. “We get to meet the people who run the show, and they’re all so excited to talk to us.”

Boucher, an advertising major, has been a member of the club for a year. He said the president, vice president, and many of the club’s members also major in advertising, but the club is open to all interested students.

Gibbs said participation in the club lets students experience the accounting side of advertising.

Many of the club’s projects start when businesses seek the help of the club, or vice versa. Members of the club first consult with clients to determine the content of the advertisements it creates. Next they work on the format of their advertisements and create designs that accommodate clients’ demands.

“Most client work starts in October,” Gibbs said. During August and September, the club spends some time working out plans for the school year.

Members of club gathered yesterday in front of the Goertzen Communication Addition, grabbed some sidewalk chalk, and demonstrated their creative abilities.

Senior Amanda Collier is Advertising Club Vice President.

“It’s a bonding activity,” Collier said. “We’re trying to branch out and actively do creative things during club time.”

Each of the members displayed a unique style. Some drew the Cougar logo; others quoted their favorite philosophers. Many of the drawings involved an Advertising Club theme. Boucher drew a snowman.

The Advertising Club meets Wednesdays at 5 p.m in GCAD 218.
