Cross Country men finish second in Seattle; women take sixth

The WSU cross country team competed in their longest race of the season over the weekend at the Sundodger Invitational in Seattle.

The WSU men competitors finished in second place with a score of 52 points. Senior Andrew Gonzales finished in eighth place and was the top Cougar finisher of the race. Gonzales ran a time of 24 minutes and 13.56 seconds in the 8,000-meter race.

“On the men’s side, I was happy with our place but was disappointed on how a number of guys ran complacent, which you can’t do against a good team like Washington,” WSU Cross Country Coach Tim Riley said in a press release. “Forrest Shaffer and Andrew Gonzales each ran a great race, and I thought the freshman guys did well for their first 8,000-meter race.”

Shaffer finished in 11th place for WSU and ran a time of 24 minutes and 14.23 seconds.

The University of Washington won the overall race with a score of 30 points, according to WSUCougars.com.

The WSU women competitors finished in sixth place.

“I was happy with how the Cougs worked together throughout the race,” Riley said. “I thought they were a little too conservative in the middle, which is where the points got away from us.”

WSU sophomore CharLee Linton was the top Cougar woman to finish the race. Linton finished in 20th place and ran a time of 21 minutes and 52 seconds.

The University of Washington was the overall women’s team winner, which finished the day with a final score of 19 points, followed by Oregon State with 58 points, according to WSUcougars.com.

The WSU cross country team will look to continue their progress on Sept. 21 when they travel to Spokane Valley to compete in the Erik Anderson Memorial Invitational.
