Rookies on the rise, veterans fall

Start – Eddie Royal, WR, Chargers

Eddie Royal has been fairly irrelevant in fantasy terms for the past five seasons, but the 27-year-old wide-out has stormed back thus far in 2013. Royal has pulled in five touchdowns already and currently appears to be Philip Rivers’ favorite target. With Malcom Floyd likely to miss some time after suffering a scary head/neck injury Sunday against Philadelphia, Royal could be in for even more targets this week against Tennessee.

Sit – Ray Rice, RB, Ravens

Rice may be in for another rough outing this week as the Ravens take on one of the best run-defenses in the NFL, the Houston Texans. Rice has barely cracked double-digit carries and hasn’t topped 40 yards rushing in a game yet. To make matters worse, Rice suffered a strained hip flexor on Sunday. He has breakout potential, but there is a decent chance he could produce another paltry fantasy outing.

Start – Giovani Bernard, RB, Bengals

After a quiet debut with only five touches in a Week 1 contest with Chicago, Bernard needed only nine touches in Week 2’s Monday night game against Pittsburgh. He managed to rack up 65 all-purpose yards and a pair of touchdowns (that’s 7.2 yards per touch). This week the speedy rookie takes on a Green Bay defense that has been mediocre so far this season, so if you’re looking for a flex guy with some big play upside, Bernard might be your man.

Sit – Maurice Jones-Drew, RB, Jaguars

MJD and Felix Hernandez should meet up for coffee this weekend in Seattle. They could relate to each other given that they are both premier players in their respective sport but stuck in terrible situations. Oakland held MJD to just 28 total yards last weekend, which isn’t a testament to poor play from him or a great Oakland defense; it’s thanks to a terrible supporting cast on offense. This week MJD will be fighting for yards in Seattle against maybe the best defense in the NFL, and after incurring a mild ankle injury last week this matchup’s upside is minimal at best.

Start – Marlon Brown, WR, Ravens

The Ravens have been more pass heavy thus far in 2013 and undrafted free-agent Marlon Brown has benefited. Brown has caught a touchdown in each of the first two games this season and is the most productive receiver in this offense right now. In a game against Houston that could be high-scoring, based on the Texans’ past two 30-plus point outings, Brown could haul in another touchdown.
