Golf continues a rivalry

Two weeks into the 2013-14 season, the Washington State University men’s golf team isn’t shying away from rivalry.

The team traveled to Bremerton to compete Monday and Tuesday in the Kikkor Golf Husky Invitational, hosted by the University of Washington. The Invitational is the team’s second event of the season.

The tournament, hosted at Gold Mountain Golf Club, will follow a similar format to WSU’s season-opening tournament last week, where the Cougars took home the trophy. Each team will play two rounds of golf on Monday, followed by another round on Tuesday to decide the winner.

“After a good week at home, I am excited to see how we will compete on the road against an exceptional field,” Head Coach Garrett Clegg said in an interview with the Associated Press. “It is a challenging venue and will require us to be on top of all aspects of our games to compete in the tournament. We are looking forward to the challenge that is ahead of us.”

The Cougars will stay with their original five-man lineup from last week’s Itani Quality Homes Collegiate title. Junior Michael Anderson, sophomore Ryan Books, redshirt junior Sang Lee, freshman Nick Mandell, and senior Blake Snyder will lead WSU in the team competition. While junior Jarrett Foote, senior Kent Hagen, junior Charlie Mroz, sophomore Bhurinat Songpaiboon, freshman Blake Toolan, and redshirt junior Alex Wagner will compete as singles for WSU in the individual competition.

In the competition with UW and WSU in this year’s 14-team event are Arizona State, BYU, UC Davis, Gonzaga, Oregon, Oregon State, Pacific, Pepperdine, Saint Mary’s, San Diego, San Diego State, USC, and Utah.

UW took home the event title in last year’s Kikkor Golf Husky Invitational. WSU tied for sixth with Pac-12 University of Oregon, 37 strokes back from the Huskies.

Cougar fans can follow live results from the event at golfstat.com. For fans on the west side of the state, entrance into the event is free. Tournament results will also be posted to wsucougars.com as well as the Daily Evergreen sports Twitter account, @EvergreenSports.
