Champions of the talent show at last

By Lance Lijewski

Gannon-Goldsworthy made Homecoming Talent Show history as they took the win for the first time in the event’s history.

Countless students came forth with diverse talents Tuesday night in the CUB Senior Ballroom. Among their performances were acoustic covers, rap originals, vocal medleys and ribbon dances.

In the end it were team members from Gannon-Goldsworthy who took first place. Consisting entirely of first year students, the team caught the attention of judges last weekend at the Homecoming Lip Sync Competition, which it did not win.

Their stylized performance featured a mash-up of pop songs “A Little Party Never Killed Nobody,” by Fergie, and “Mr. Saxobeat,” by Alexandra Stan.

Freshman Heather Clements was one of the Gannon-Goldsworthy performers.

“It’s amazing that we won,” she said. “We worked so hard to get this done.”

The Gannon-Goldsworthy team practiced its routine throughout the week prior to the event. The team did not have all of its members until three days before the show.

“I’ve never seen a residence hall or freshman do so well before,” SEB Events Coordinator Logan Webberman said.

Sporting crimson jerseys and a “Go Cougs!” message on their backs, the group exited the stage with a cheer.

There was no shortage of complexity in the show’s other performances, either.

Freshman Amara Quinn joined Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity in performing to a medley of music by Adele and Rihanna set to the rhythm of current chart-topping single “Cups,” by Anna Kendrick.

“The hardest part was getting the whole idea together,” she said. “We had to pick the songs we wanted and find a way to make them work with ‘Cups’.”

Difficulties didn’t stop the Gamma Phi Beta sorority and the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity from gaining second place. Having a missing soundtrack and technical issues, they were bumped from the beginning to the end of the show. The Alpha Delta Pi sorority and the Sigma Nu fraternity trailed behind in third.

Senior Jay Kwon performed in a ten-person production of five dancing felt midgets synchronized to hit singles “Soulja Boy” and “Kung Fu Fighting.”

“We were really excited to come back,” Kwon said. “We wanted to surprise everybody and only had a chance to run through one portion at first.”

The team remained humble throughout the show. At the end of the night, it stressed to the audience the importance of dance and theater education.

Round 2 of the Homecoming Talent Show will continue tomorrow night at Streit Perham.

SEB’s Lunch Time Series will continue serving free pizza today from 12 to 1 on the Todd Steps.
