Cross Country women race strong in Spokane

With the Notre Dame Invitational and NCAA Preview meets approaching in two weeks, Cross Country Coach Tim Riley sent a limited number of runners to compete in the Erik Anderson Invitational in Spokane over the weekend.

According to wsucougars.com, the men’s cross country team did not compete in the race.  Instead, a limited number of women represented WSU.

WSU women’s cross country runner Steffie Pavey was the top Cougar woman to finish the race. Pavey finished in 20th place overall in the 6,000-meter race with a time of 23 minutes.

Amanda Henderson was the second WSU woman runner to finish the race, placing 28th and running a time of 24 minutes and 17.31 seconds, according to wsucougars.com.

Other Cougar runners who competed in the race were: Ashlie Standow, who finished in 31st place and ran a time of 24 minutes and 34.84 seconds; Alexys Garcia, who finished in 32nd place with a time of 24 minutes and 44.49 seconds; and Hailey Gibson, who finished in 38th place and ran a time of 25 minutes and 45.20 seconds.

The race included Division I, Division II and Division III schools along with NAIA and junior colleges, according to wsucougars.com.

The overall winner of the 6,000-meter race was Dani Walker from Lipscomb, who ran a time of 21 minutes and 39.83 seconds.

Up next, the men’s cross country team will compete at the Notre Dame Invitational and the women’s team will compete in the NCAA Preview in Sacramento, Calif., both on Oct. 4.
