The Washington State University volleyball team took down Oregon State 3-2 (26-24, 25-20, 20-25, 26-28, 15-9) to improve to 14-1 (1-1) on the season.

The Cougs’ win over OSU (9-4, 0-2) guaranteed WSU an improved record from 2012 when the team finished 13-19.

The Cougars took the first two sets before dropping the third and fourth, forcing the match into a fifth and decisive set.

“I’m very proud of the way the team fought. It’s tough being up 2-0 and going to five but they really did a nice job in the fifth set to finish it off,” WSU Head Coach Jen Greeny said in a press conference.

Freshman Kyra Holt led the Cougars with 26 kills in the match, while juniors Jaicee Harris and Ver’Leea Hardaway contributed 16 and 10 kills, respectively.

The Cougars hit .207 in the match, holding the Beavers to .149, while also out-blocking the Beavers 15-13.

Senior captain Camryn Irwin tallied a career-high with 61 assists in the match, topping the 49 she recorded against Army earlier this season.

“Camryn did a pretty nice job because their blockers were going with our middles, so we were able to go outside and leave Kyra one-on-one a lot,” Greeny said. “Even though the middles didn’t get set much they were really doing their jobs.”

Four players for WSU recorded double-digit dig totals, with sophomore Kate Sommer leading the way with 21.

Up next for the Cougars is another weekend on the road, taking on Utah Friday, Oct. 4 and Colorado Sunday, Oct. 6.
