Men’s golf goes to Colorado

For the first time this season, the men’s golf team will leave the state of Washington to compete in the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational today and tomorrow.

The Invitational will take place at the Colorado National Golf Club in Erie, Colo. The club is a prestigious course all-too-familiar with collegiate events.

“This tournament will be a good challenge for our team, especially given the elevation in Erie, Colorado,” Head Coach Garrett Clegg said.

The Cougars are looking to expand on their quick start to the season, headlined by a first place team finish in the season-opening Itani Quality Homes Collegiate at Palouse Ridge Golf Club two weeks ago.

Last week, WSU traveled across the state to compete in the University of Washington Kikkor Golf Husky Invitational in Bremerton. The Cougars placed 11th overall in the 15-team event and finished ahead of rival Gonzaga University and Pac-12 opponent University of Utah.

The Cougars will set their sights on the Colorado Invitational, hosted by Pac-12 rival Colorado University. Set to compete in the out-of-state event for WSU is junior Michael Anderson, senior Blake Snyder, redshirt junior Sang Lee, junior Charlie Mroz, and sophomore Bhurinat Songpaiboon. Mroz and Songpaiboon will make their first appearance on WSU’s five-man team lineup this week.

“Bhurinat Songpaiboon and Charlie Mroz will help our consistency,” Clegg said. “Both have been playing solid golf over the past three weeks and have earned the chance to compete in our lineup. Sang Lee, Blake Snyder and Michael Anderson seem to be getting better each week and are excited for the opportunity to compete in another great event.”

Competing with the Cougars in the 15-team Invitational include: host-school Colorado, Air Force, Campbell, Denver, Gonzaga, Houston Baptist, UMKC, Nebraska, Nevada, Northern Colorado, Oregon State, Texas State, Utah, and Wyoming.

Play will begin with two rounds of golf headed by a shotgun start 8:15 a.m. today.
