5K run supports local clubs and agencies

Runners will take their mark for fourth annual Dash for Cash this Saturday at 9 a.m. at Toyota of Pullman.

The 5K run is a fundraiser that helps the United Way of Moscow/Latah County support places such as, Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts, Palouse Habitat for Humanity, Circle of Caring, and other agencies in the Moscow, Latah and Pullman area, said Whitney Aguilar, secretary of United Way.

“We’re not the biggest agency in terms of dollars,” Aguilar said. “But any of these organizations may be receiving $500 to $5,000 from us.”

United Way of Moscow/Latah County puts on fundraisers throughout the year, but the Dash for Cash is the kickoff in the fall. It supports 18 different agencies in various places around the Palouse, Aguilar said.

The Dash for Cash is a place for runners and walkers to utilize the Chipman Palouse Trail from Pullman to Moscow and back. Aguilar said the trail is a good place to run or walk because it is easy and wide.

Many organizations support the run, and many sponsors show up. Vendors including Dutch Bros. Coffee, Idaho Ice, Moscow Food Co-op will serve refreshments at the event.

“This is our second year of sponsorship and office participation for the Dash for Cash,” said Jessi Helbling, a ClearView Eye Clinic employee. “This is a great community event that is for a great cause.”

The Dash for Cash run also offers prizes for those who wish to avoid competition. Prizes are for first, second and third place categories based on ages. It is highly encouraged that families come to enjoy the event together, Aguilar said.

She said the weather is supposed to be nice on Saturday, so comfortable clothes and a sweatshirt may be appropriate. Although free water will be offered after the race, Aguilar suggested people bring their own.

“Come to have fun and come to support the United Way,” Aguilar said.

Donations of $22 for adults and $12 for children 6-15 years old include a commemorative T-shirt. Children under five may participate for free, but a donation of $10 is required for them to receive the T-shirt. Registration is open to all ages.

Pre-registration is accepted online or by mail through Friday. Pre-registered participants are more likely to receive the T-shirt. Participants are encouraged to show up early, as Moscow Crossfit will lead a warm-up session at 8:40 a.m.
