Cougars take on Titans in California

The still undefeated Washington State University women’s soccer team will head to Southern California to take on the Cal State Fullerton Titans Friday at 6 p.m.

The Cougars are fresh off a 2-0 home win Sept. 13 against UNLV and a 2-2 draw against Oklahoma State on the road.

Head Coach Keidane McAlpine was pleased with his team’s successful performance while maintaining its undefeated record.

“It was a fantastic weekend,” he said in a press conference. “The goal was to go through the weekend and stay undefeated.”

Following the home game Friday, the Cougars quickly traveled more than 1,700 miles to Stillwater, Okla., which strained the team.

“With all the travel and everything we had to deal with on the trip, it was a good result for us,” McAlpine said.

According to Washington State Athletics, the Cougars have only trailed 9:50 of the 670:00 minutes of play this season and have quickly closed gaps when being down including an equalizer from senior forward Micaela Castain 48 seconds after Oklahoma State took a 2-1 lead.

“The response and the energy of the team has been absolutely fantastic,” McAlpine said.

Castain will look to continue her record. She is tied for sixth nationally with 19 points and eight goals, which is good for a ninth place tie.

“She’s finally taking on the responsibility of being the top striker,” McAlpine said. “This year she has stepped up to the plate and taken it on herself to keep us scoring goals and moving forward.”

Despite the school-record 11th straight unbeaten game dating back to last season, McAlpine said there is still room for improvement, and discussions of unbeaten streaks don’t come up as a topic of conversation.

“We don’t talk about it all that much,” he said. “We just talk about being more consistent in what we’re doing from our defensive positioning to our tackling and looking to continue to get better.”

The trip to California will be the last of the team’s non-conference schedule.

“We’re fortunate enough that Fullerton has given us enough reason to stay focused,” he said. “The team will not look past them. We will be ready to play.”

Cal State Fullerton will enter the Friday match with a 3-2-2 record, including 3-0-2 at home.

The Titans have received a balanced array of scoring from its players, with five women scoring one goal each.

Historically, Cal State Fullerton won the only previous meeting 2-1 in Logan, Utah, during the 1998 season.
