Rowing overcomes weather

Even with the weather battling the Cougars in the first race of the season, women’s crew managed to record strong times at the Head of the Pend Oreille Regatta.

Cougar Head Coach Jane LaRiviere was proud of the team’s performance in bad weather conditions.

“It was cold and windy and I thought our team did an excellent job in some challenging conditions,” she said.

In the varsity four flight, the crew finished in the top five, taking second and fourth place.

The B boat (Teo Berindei, Ieva Adomaviciute, Morgan Cathrea, Elisa Jones, and Emily Boquet-coxswain) had the top time at 18:46.7, followed by the A boat (Mickey Aylard, Nicole Hare, Kerry Hassall, Jordan Watson, and Rebecca Burns-coxswain) at 19:06.8.

Next up was Gonzaga’s A boat coming in at 19:16.4, and then WSU’s C boat (Carter Marks, Hannah deVos, Emily Starkel, Ashlee Bonahoom,  and Sarah Wu-coxswain) coming in at 19:25.6.

Up on the list for the varsity fours flight was the Cougs D team at 19:34.3 (Isabella Watt, Savannah Davison, Mollie McCabe, Megan McDonald, and Lauren Leahy-coxswain), again followed by the Gonzaga B boat that came in at 21:00.0

Earlier in the morning the varsity eight flight race took place. The G boat (Kim Coon, Mallory Wordell, Alex Wadell, Gina Head, Erin Schuster, Carly Johnson, Ella Odland, Noel Christiansen, and Julia Monroe-coxswain) also started off strong, taking first place and beating Gonzaga by 25 seconds with a time of 18:03.6.

The varsity eight C boat (Katelyn Maley, Hannah Jacobs, Lori VerMurlen, Chloe Rogers, Katrina Tarrant, Sarah Steger, Kellen Srb, Alyssa Rumann, and Jayme Dailey-coxswain) finished fourth with a time of 18:53.0, beating Gonzaga’s B crew by 20 seconds coming in at 19:13.3.

The Cougs hope to continue their solid start to the season when they go to Spokane for the Head of the Spokane, hosted by Gonzaga on Saturday, Oct.26.
