First Down Friday keeps the grown-up celebration hopping

For those few who enjoy beer, Cougar football or both, First Down Friday this evening in downtown Pullman welcomes the community to celebrate Homecoming football weekend.

“It’s a bit more adult-oriented than last weekend’s First Down Friday,” said Vicki Leeper, Pullman Chamber of Commerce tourism director. The event is put on by the Pullman Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by WSU Athletics, ASWSU and the WSU Alumni Association.

After enjoying the Homecoming bonfire at 6 p.m., anyone 21 or older is invited to stroll down to Paradise Creek Brewery by 7:30 p.m. for the beginning of the second annual Homecoming Bar Hop.

Participants can enjoy their first craft-brewed pint paired with the invigorating tones of Moscow-based soul band Igor and the Swamp Donkeys. The band might be from Vandal-land, but they also feature double the keyboardists of your average band.

The brewery will also have maps to help participants chart a path through four of Pullman’s finest providers of lip-smacking liquids. A book of coupons is also provided to reduce the cost of drinks.

Official bar hop destinations include: Pullman’s postal-haunted Paradise Creek Brewery; the Cougar-iffic walls of the Sports Page; My Office and their stained glass shrine to Butch; and the venerable grandfather of Pullman pubs, Rico’s.

At each hop stop, participants can use their coupons to enter a raffle for prizes. The raffle starts at 9:30 p.m., and the more stops made, the greater the chances of winning. Winners could walk away with T-shirts, WSU flags, more beer, and gift baskets from each place. One person might even run away with a football with the signature of Head Football Coach Mike Leach.

Pullman Mayor Glenn Johnson said this will be the last First Down Friday event of the season.

“The temperatures start to drop around this time of year, and it gets too chilly to do more,” he said.

Participants are advised to bring along warm clothing.

Last weekend’s First Down Friday event was focused on family, Leeper said. It included inflatables, food vendors, and a pep band performance.
