Cross Country races in Spokane

After a strong showing in Seattle over the weekend, the Washington State University cross country team looks to have another successful performance this weekend at the Erik Anderson Invitational in Spokane.

“We’re running a limited crew up there, mainly just the freshman women and a couple of the younger guys,” Cross Country Coach Tim Riley said in a press release. “This should just be an experience meet. The idea with that is to give them more experience with the 6000m.”

The majority of the WSU cross country team is preparing for the upcoming Notre Dame invitational and NCAA Preview meets instead of competing in the meet this weekend.

Most of the teams that will compete in the Erik Anderson Invitational are Division II schools. Riley said he expects there will be quite a few good schools.

The Erik Anderson Invitational will act as a Division II preview meet for the NCAA Division-II Championships course later this fall, Riley said.

The race will take place at Plantes Ferry Park in Spokane.

“Spokane has a rich distance running history,” Riley said in an interview with wsucougars.com. “It’s a great spectator course.”

According to Riley, the course is mostly a grass surface without many big turns, and it is a wide course that can handle a lot of people.

“We’ve liked to go back there in the past,” Riley said. “We’ll see what happens this weekend.”
