The quaint town of Garfield, population averaging 600, relies on its strong and connected community. Schaut’s Marketplace, the only convenience store in Garfield, is a vital piece of what makes this town whole.
Schaut’s Marketplace volunteer Andrea Devaney, has lived in Garfield since 2014 and shared how important the town’s community is.
“It’s the people here. You see more of a sense of community here than you do in other places,” Devaney said. “You see people rally more for everybody else around here. Living here, it gives you a sense of peace.”
Devaney said the town runs on everyone’s sincere care for each other and willingness to help. When the shop first opened, the owner, started with $300 and a dream. Now, the store is an essential part of the culture of a small town.
“I’ve watched this place grow exponentially. This town [needed] a store,” Devaney said. “I don’t know how many people I hear come in on a regular basis, letting us know how happy [they are] that we exist.”
The volunteers know their customers by name and get the produce and merchandise themselves. In addition to convenient groceries, the marketplace offers a knick-knack and antique corner with books and household items. The marketplace establishes the peace and security Garfield provides.
“Welcome home,” Devaney said.
