Staying perfect; volleyball takes home 10th win.

With a trio of sweeps last weekend, the Washington State University volleyball team won the Sam Houston Invitational and improved its season record to 10-0.

“We played well all weekend, especially offensively,” WSU Head Coach Jen Greeny said in a press release. “I am really proud of our team.”

Freshman outside hitter Kyra Holt was named tournament MVP for the second time in her early career, while junior middle blocker Ver’Leea Hardaway and senior middle hitter Marcelina Glab were both named to the all-tournament team.

To open up the weekend on Friday, WSU took down Jackson State 3-0 with set scores of 25-12, 25-19 and 25-18.

“I liked how we came out aggressive, especially in that first set, and we were able to get just about everybody in the match, so that’s a reward for the hard work people have been putting in at practice,” Greeny said.

Holt led the Cougars in the match with 17 kills hitting .394, while Hardaway contributed nine kills.

The Cougars out-hit Jackson State .358 to .012 in the match.

Freshman right-side hitter Hailey Bethune saw her first collegiate action in the match against Jackson State and contributed four kills.

Next for the Cougars was an early Saturday morning match against Lamar, again getting the sweep with set scores of 25-17, 25-14 and 25-17.

“I was really pleased with our blocking and the way we slowed their hitters down. I think we were pretty consistent throughout the whole match,” Greeny said. “We’ve been talking about blocking with a purpose, and Camryn (Irwin) was up against their best hitter, and she definitely did a good job on her.”

Holt again led the Cougars in kills, recording 15 against Lamar while junior outside hitter Jaicee Harris contributed nine and Glab tallied eight.

On Saturday night the Cougars wrapped up another tournament victory with a 3-0 sweep of host Sam Houston State with set scores of 25-15, 25-14 and 25-21.

Harris and Hardaway each recorded 11 kills while Holt contributed 12 for WSU, and the Cougars out-hit Sam Houston State .322 to .027.

Over the course of the tournament, Irwin led WSU with 101 assists.

The Cougars have won all three tournaments played this season, and they accomplished a sweep in seven of their 10 overall match victories.

The Cougars will return home to host their second tournament of the season with the Cougar Invitational Sept. 19-21.
