The WSU Baseball team may have started 0-8, but since then the team has bounced back nicely and now finds itself two games out of second place in the Mountain West conference with about a month to go in the season.
Here’s how I think the rest of the year will go for the Cougs. Currently, the team is 15-23, with an 8-10 conference record.
April 23: at UC Davis
The one game series against UC Davis matches WSU up with a 19-19 Aggies squad. Wazzu will win this game in a much-needed road win to get to 16-23.
April 25-27: at Fresno State
Fresno State leads the Mountain West, and WSU has struggled on the road. Still, I think the Cougars will find a way to sneak a win. They’ll leave Fresno 17-25, with a 9-12 conference record.
April 29: vs Gonzaga
The Cougs have beaten Gonzaga in a thriller earlier this year, but also lost a close game at home last time they hosted the Bulldogs. This time they will get the upper hand and come out of it with a win, to move to 18-25.
May 2-4: vs Air Force
Both WSU and Air Force are 8-10 in conference at the moment. However, WSU has a better offense, and at home on graduation weekend, they will get the job done and win two of three against, improving to 20-26, with an 11-13 mark in conference.
May 6: at Seattle
The Cougs hosted Seattle in early March and lost a game they probably should have won. This time around they will get revenge in Seattle and improve to 21-26.
May 9-11: vs UNLV
UNLV is currently at the bottom of the Mountain West with an ugly record of 6-12. WSU will take advantage of a home series against the Rebels, and will take care of things. The Cougs come away with their second home sweep of the season to improve to 24-26, with a conference record of 14-13.
May 13: at Gonzaga
Gonzaga and the Cougs will split their four games this year, with Gonzaga getting the last laugh in Spokane. Cougs fall to 24-27.
May 16-18: at SDSU
The Aztecs were swept by WSU in Pullman, but have since gotten hot and are currently in second place in the Mountain West. Still, the Cougs will come to San Diego on a hot streak of their own. They’ll take two out of three and finish the season with a 26-28 record, sitting at 16-14 in conference.
A strong finish for the Cougs, as I have them going 11-5 down the stretch, and going 8-4 in conference. However, with a pair of weak opponents at home (Air Force and UNLV) combined with a road trip to SDSU to play a team the Cougs have already swept, it feels like the time to strike has arrived. 16-14 could be good enough for second in the Mountain West, and from there, anything can happen in the Mountain West tournament.
